AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON VESSEL-TONIC

An herb that improves the tone and integrity of blood vessel walls. This is helpful in easy bruising.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) leading to heart failure is the #1 cause of death - accounting for 30% of all deaths. Prevalence of CVD is increasing.

In CVD, damage to blood vessels gradually causes obstruction in vessels. This obstruction leads to obstruction and lack of blood flow (ischemia). To compensate, the heart raises blood pressure and works herder to maintain blood flow. This results in thickening of heart walls (hypertrophy), blood clotting, and, if ischemia to the heart is severe enough, heart attack.

High blood pressure also further damages vessels, leads to fibrosis of the kidneys, liver, and lungs, and causes blindness, cerebral insufficiency, and dementia.

The key is preventing damage to blood vessels. Vessels are damaged by:

  • Inflammation causing plaque formation. Plaque is a lipid / cholesterol deposit designed to help repair blood vessels.
  • High blood pressure (hypertenstion) - causing inflammation
  • Deterioration of vascular muscle - sometimes as a result of inflammation
  • Vessel infection
The ideal vessel tonic nourishes blood vessels, and has one or more of the following properties:
  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Reduces blood pressure (hypotensive)
  • Smooth muscle tonic
  • Flavonoids - Ginkgo, Hawthorne, Rose Hips
  • Polysaccharides - Reishi
