AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON PROGESTERONICProgeserone is the pregnancy hormone. It raises body temperature (Pitta), and suppresses menstruation. It is generally more extroverted.Raises progesterone levels. Helps with delayed menstruation. Signs of progesterone deficiency include loss of self-esteem, withdrawal tendencies, painful, swollen, or lumpy breasts (due to estrogen dominance), fatigue. Progesterone tempers estrogen which is why progesterone deficiency mimics estrogen dominance. Progesterone relaxes muscles and ligaments (to open hips for childbirth). It raises temperature (Pitta). Progesterone is released after ovulation. Just after ovulation, the woman should see a rise in basal body temperature for 12-14 days. If the temperature drops before then, it signals a deficiency of progesterone. Progesterone stops estrogen from thickening the endometrium, and instead causes many crypts and invaginations, preparing the uterine wall for implantation of a fertilized egg. Progesterone is considered to be Kidney Yang in TCM. To correct the deficiency, nourish blood and warmth, in addition to progesteronic herbs.
