How Does This Ayurvedic Herb Supplement Improve Wellness?

CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Amalaki - the fruit of an Amalaki tree (Emblica officinalis) - is an amazingly useful Ayurvedic herb.

Vitality Tonic & Rejuvenative

As a potent rejuvenative for the entire body, Amalaki stimulates the production of red blood cells and enhances cellular regeneration.

Amalaki strengthens the bones and teeth, and cause hair and nails to grow. In India, Amalaki is used to encourage rich, luxurious hair growth.

Those who want to increases lean body mass can find help with Amalaki.

Amalaki has the highest concentration of absorbable vitamin C. This makes it a sour immune stimulant.

It is the main ingredient in the traditional Ayurvedic jam called chyavanprash, a tasty rejuvenative tonic (rasayana) and immune tonic used for centuries to deliver the healing benefits of Amalaki deep into your tissues.

As it nourishes, strengthens, and cleanses bodily tissues, Amalaki is balancing for all doshas, especially Pitta.

Liver and Blood Purifying Tonic

As a sour fruit packed with antioxidants, Amalaki is a natural anti-inflammatory, liver, and spleen tonic.

Its sourness also makes it an excellent vasodilator of capillary beds, rejuvenating the skin and circulatory system.

Altogether these properties help it gently detoxify your body and purify your blood of all Pitta conditions, especially Pitta skin conditions such as rashes, inflammation, or ulcers.

These liver and blood healing properties make Amalaki an excellent choice to improve eyesight.

Reduces GI Heat and Inflammation

While all of these benefits sound good, they are only part of the reason for the popularity of this very powerful herb.

Amalaki is one of three ingredients in Triphala Ayurveda's most widely used herb formula.

Considered a general panacea for almost all imbalances, Triphala is also excellent for detoxifying and rejuvenating the body.

However, Amalaki by itself may be a better choice if you suffer from Pitta conditions of the GI tract including gastritis, colitis, ulcers, heartburn or acid reflux. All of these can compromise your digestive tract with their excess heat.

The sourness of Amalaki softens stools, supporting healthy, regular elimination.

As a natural anti-inflammatory, Amalaki helps expel excess heat while it soothes and protects the tissues of your ailing GI tract.

Amalakis vasodilating properties promote improved digestive fire (agni).

Amalaki helps to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

How to Take

Dosage: 1/4-1/2tsp in warm water before meals or bedtime. Since Amalaki is very astringent, it initially makes your mouth dry, but only temporarily, however.

Shortly thereafter, it provokes release of saliva. Finally, it tastes sweet. To minimize dryness in the mouth, brew as a tea then strain. Or, mix with a bit of honey.

Guna Help

Increases These Biocharacteristics (Gunas)

Functional Ayurveda helps you assess imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (gunas). Aggravating these characteristics weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which characteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct imbalances before you get sick. Every characteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite characteristic.

TASTES
Taste Help

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

DOSHAS
Dosha Help

The Three Doshas / Body Types

According to the biocharacteristic theory of medicine, people tend to get sick, over and over again, due to habitual causes and imbalances that are unique to the person. Your body type summarizes this tendency, showing you the 'type' of conditions and imbalances that frequently challenge your health & wellness. Using body type, you can also identify remedies likely to improve your strength and resiliency. Your body type identifies physical and mental characteristics as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. The calculation of your body type is based on your medical history.

The 3 functional body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha). Catabolic individuals tend to break down body mass into energy. They are easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry. Metabolic individuals tend to burn or use energy. They tend to be rosy-cheeked, easily irritated, focused, driven, and easily inflamed. Anabolic individuals tend to store energy as body mass. If they store too much energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion. Anabolic people tend to be stable and grounded.

How would one use the fresh amalaki. I have seen it in Indian grocery stores

You can simply eat it. Often Indian groceries stores will have dried ones as well.
Amalaki is generally cooling to the bowels. I'd be happy to do a consultation with you concerning your sister since there are many other variables involved. Thanks!
I started taking amalaki and have LOVED the benefits on my skin, but I noticed that it seems a bit constipating. Is this a normal side effect to Amalaki? It's been great otherwise.

It sounds like this is not the right herb for you. I suggest working with your doctor or practitioner to find a better fit.
