How Does This Ayurvedic Herb Supplement Improve Wellness?
CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW
Chyavanprash is an immune and respiratory tonic for cold, weak, and underweight Vata individuals, especially during periods of stress. The sweet, sour and spicy formula prevents seasonal colds and flus, improves circulation, stimulates metabolism, and kindles the digestive fire. It is a nerve tonic and rejuvenative for the whole body.
Chyavanprash may be compared to a spicy version of elderberry syrup in western herbalism.
It is traditionally used for colds, flus, asthma, allergies, chest congestion, cough, fatigue, general debility. - Rejuvenative for mind and body
- Supports immunity
- Improves circulation
- Stimulates metabolism and improves the digestive function (in Vata / Vishama agni only)
- Supports healthy lungs and respiration
Chyavanprash is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal jam with a base of amalaki fruit, cane sugar, ghee and honey. The sweet ingredients make chyawanprash nourishing. However, the formula is contraindicated for diabetes.
Amalaki is a rich source of antioxidants. It is an excellent rejuvenative (rasayana) that nourishes and strengthens the body, providing energy and vitality.
To the above are added spicy and aromatic ingredients. The spices and aromatic ingredients in chyawanprash improve circulation, dilate blood vessels, improve digestion, and tonify the nerves.
Altogether, the formula is sweet, sour, and spicy with a hint of astringency. Chyvanprash is frequently given to children. In a small daily dose (1 or 2 teaspoons), it makes for a tasty and very healthful treat.
Chyvanprash also includes strengthening herbs like gokshura and ashwagandha.
Finally, it contains cleansing ingredients like triphala and punarnava. Triphala is a laxative. Punarnava is a diuretic and also strengthens the heart. Effect on DoshasAlthough it may be used in all body types. It is ideal for low immunity in cold, weak, underweight Vata individuals. The spices and sourness may aggravate Pitta. While the sweetness can aggravate Kapha. ContraindicationsAs the sweet ingredients aggravate dampness, avoid in high kapha and thick coating on the tongue. Chyavanprash may be too heating during hot weather. Avoid in diarrhea. Do not use when taking blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines. INCREASES
Increases These Biocharacteristics (Gunas)
Functional Ayurveda helps you assess imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics
(gunas).
Aggravating these characteristics weakens your body and causes imbalance.
By knowing which characteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct imbalances before you get sick.
Every characteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold).
You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite characteristic.

The 6 Tastes
Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food.
Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body.
Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food.
Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods.
Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion.
Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste.
One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes.
The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SWEET | DOSHAS
The Three Doshas / Body Types
According to the biocharacteristic theory of medicine,
people tend to get sick, over and over again, due to habitual causes and imbalances that are unique to the person.
Your body type summarizes this tendency, showing you the 'type' of conditions and imbalances that frequently challenge your health & wellness.
Using body type, you can also identify remedies likely to improve your strength and resiliency.
Your body type identifies physical and mental characteristics as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses.
The calculation of your body type is based on your medical history.
The 3 functional body types
(doshas),
are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).
Catabolic individuals tend to break down body mass into energy. They are easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry.
Metabolic individuals tend to burn or use energy. They tend to be rosy-cheeked, easily irritated, focused, driven, and easily inflamed.
Anabolic individuals tend to store energy as body mass. If they store too much energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion. Anabolic people tend to be stable and grounded.

We suggest you stop taking herbs when you become pregnant. Always check with your primary physician.

Very potent. Can only tolerate 1/4 tsp.
Can this be used in conjunction with Healthy Vata?
- Susan Bardfeld, Bonita springs, FL , 05-05-15 ( Reply)
We generally say take no more than two herb formulas at a time, and space them out (i.e. taking one in the morning and evening, and the other before lunch and dinner). Consult with your Ayurvedic practitioner to see if this will work for you.

It's hard to give advice for specific individuals such as your 2 year old without more information. Generally, herbs are not recommended for children that young, but this could be appropriate for your son depending on his condition. It's best to work with a practitioner when using herbs.

I already take ashwagandha in the morning. Would it be alright to add this another time during the day?
- Lisa , 07-29-19 ( Reply)
It's generally recommended to take Chyvanprash first thing in the morning. You might experiment with taking Ashwagandha at night before bed.
