Have you noticed someone you love flaring up at you recently? Have you ever wondered why you feel more irritated in the summer? In the heat of summer, your liver releases excess bile, which irritates both your gut and your nervous system. Excess bilirubin (a bile precursor) in your blood irritates your nervous system, making you feel hot under the collar.

Since heat increases circulation, increased blood flow is a natural effect of summer. On the positive side, exuberant blood flow leads to all the celebratory fun of summer.

However, the extra blood flow also heats up the liver, forcing it to work harder. Extra blood flow strains and overstimulates your liver, and aggravates fiery Pitta dosha.

Spicy food, alcohol, or too much clothing on a hot summer day compounds these effects. Liver heat stimulates bile, which is hot and irritating in nature. Increased bile constituents in the blood irritate you and increases inflammatory conditions (called choleric heat in Greek medicine). Your intestines might even feel hot and sour.

When your liver is strained, you lose perspective and patience. A strained liver can't keep handle stress hormones.

The result is you may become more reactive, and your emotions fiery and passionate. You may experience an aggravated liver as volatile anger, shame, jealousy, or envy. Your liver, when overstimulated, is especially reactive and sensitive to the imperfections of people closest to you.

Remedies for an Overheated Summer Temper

Pleasant, soothing remedies can restore equanimity to your exhausted, overworked liver.

For fast relief, simply wash your face with cool water.

Calm breathing, gentle twisting stretches, and a cool room can cool down an overworked liver. You may feel an initial wave of nausea in a twisting stretch before the sweet relief comes. It will be well worth it.

Internally, pear juice, coconut water, and raw cabbage juice are all cooling remedies to help your relationship survive the intensity of summer!
