Carrot Benefits (According to Ayurveda)

How Does This Ayurvedic Food Improve Wellness?

CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Cooked carrots are sweet, nourishing, easy to digest, and contain lots of fiber. They are ideal for babies and convalescing patients (i.e. those recovering from illness).

Tiny Ginseng

Exhausted? Raw carrots, and especially carrot juice have a mild pungency that is stimulating & exhilarating. They increase your energy (prana or Qi), which has earned carrots the title 'tiny ginseng' and the 'king of juices'.

Purify Your Blood

Carrot's cool nature and mild bitter taste acts purifies the blood. Strongly alkalizing, carrot has a cool and relaxing effect on the eyes. Beta-carotene, which gives carrots their bright orange color, is metabolized into vitamin A in the presence of bile salts in the small intestine. Vitamin A pacifies Pitta, nourishes the liver, and purifies the blood. These actions improve vision, complexion of the skin, and generally reduce inflammation. Carrot helps make the skin noticeably softer, smoother, and firmer. Carrots increase the quality of the breast milk. During pregnancy carrots reduce the risk of jaundice and enhance baby's complexion.

The blood purifying aspects together with carrot's sweetness make it an excellent blood and liver tonic. Carrots are ideal for liver deficiency, especially useful in the late summer dry season. To restore the liver, boil 4 carrots with 2 tbsp coconut butter.

Other Benefits

Despite its sweetness, carrot stabilizes blood sugar levels. However it should be avoided by those with candida or other sugar sensitivities. One cup of carrot juice daily in the morning can help eliminate pinworms and roundworms in children. They are rich in silicon and potassium. Too much of the concentrated juice can turn your skin orange.

About Carrot

Ancestors of the wild carrot came from Iran and Afghanistan, the center of genetic diversity for carrot. Carrots were bred from a species of wild carrot, called Queen Anne's Lace. Originally they were grown for their aromatic leaves and seeds. Since then, selective breeding has increased sweetness, reduced bitterness, and minimized the woody core. The ancient Greeks called them, 'philon' which means love charm, because carrots were considered to make men and women more amorous.

Buying & Preparation

Japanese chefs rotate the carrot when chopping - to get unique shapes. The nutrients in carrots are concentrated in or close to the skin, so buy organic and consume unpeeled for maximum results.

Cooking Carrot

Carrots are cooked in soups, shredded in carrot cake, juiced, or pureed in baby food. They are popular in salads throughout the Middle East. In India carrots are cooked into a sweet, rich dessert called carrot halwa. The greens and seeds of the carrot are also edible. Raw carrots are difficult to chew, strengthening your jaw muscles and bones.

Guna Help

Increases These Biocharacteristics (Gunas)

Functional Ayurveda helps you assess imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (gunas). Aggravating these characteristics weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which characteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct imbalances before you get sick. Every characteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite characteristic.

TASTES
Taste Help

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

DOSHAS
Dosha Help

The Three Doshas / Body Types

According to the biocharacteristic theory of medicine, people tend to get sick, over and over again, due to habitual causes and imbalances that are unique to the person. Your body type summarizes this tendency, showing you the 'type' of conditions and imbalances that frequently challenge your health & wellness. Using body type, you can also identify remedies likely to improve your strength and resiliency. Your body type identifies physical and mental characteristics as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. The calculation of your body type is based on your medical history.

The 3 functional body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha). Catabolic individuals tend to break down body mass into energy. They are easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry. Metabolic individuals tend to burn or use energy. They tend to be rosy-cheeked, easily irritated, focused, driven, and easily inflamed. Anabolic individuals tend to store energy as body mass. If they store too much energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion. Anabolic people tend to be stable and grounded.

HOW DOES EATING AYURVEDICALLY MAKE YOU FEEL?

Eating Ayurvedically makes you feel nourished and energized. Food digests with ease when right for your body type (dosha). Healthy digestion is seen as the cornerstone of well-being in Ayurveda. Healthy digestion generally prevents illness. If you do get sick, a strong digestive fire reduces the severity of illness and increases your resilience. It also improves your mood. Once you begin eating Ayurvedically, you will feel refreshed, vital and strong.

Carrots increase pitta. There are a quite a few errors in doshas and gunas of many foods on this site. Otherwise great site. Hope the mistakes are rectified in the near future.

Raw carrots, in particular, do have some pungency which can increase pitta if taken in excess. When cooked their alkalising nature and Vitamin A content can be very helpful for the pitta blood and liver. As always, it will depend on the individual's constitution. We would suggest pittas take their carrots cooked to benefit from their sweet taste. A recipe like this kale and carrot soup would be perfect! https://www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/recipe/Kale-Carrot-Soup-with-Ginger-Fennel-Lime/3089
