How Does This Ayurvedic Food Improve Wellness?

CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Often used for weight loss, vinegar strongly increases the flow of bile. Bile is a fatty, oily substance made by the liver, and stored in the gall bladder. It helps you digest fats. Since bile is also a fatty oily substance, draining bile from the liver to the small intestine pulls fats out of the blood. Bile is one of the main pathways of cholesterol metabolism for many animals.

Since the liver detoxifies the blood, bile often contains toxic metabolic by-products. Draining bile thus cleanses the liver, and has a cooling, Pitta pacifying effect on the blood, which can get congested in the spring. Apple cider vinegar, since it is made with apples, contains malic acid, a known liver tonic.

By increasing bile, and stimulating the GI tract, Vinegar softens and hydrates stool. Vinegar on the skin softens the skin. Sour taste is emotion, it grounds the heart. Vinegar can help you come back to earth after too many hours on the computer.

Guna Help

Increases These Biocharacteristics (Gunas)

Functional Ayurveda helps you assess imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (gunas). Aggravating these characteristics weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which characteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct imbalances before you get sick. Every characteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite characteristic.

TASTES
Taste Help

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

DOSHAS
Dosha Help

The Three Doshas / Body Types

According to the biocharacteristic theory of medicine, people tend to get sick, over and over again, due to habitual causes and imbalances that are unique to the person. Your body type summarizes this tendency, showing you the 'type' of conditions and imbalances that frequently challenge your health & wellness. Using body type, you can also identify remedies likely to improve your strength and resiliency. Your body type identifies physical and mental characteristics as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. The calculation of your body type is based on your medical history.

The 3 functional body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha). Catabolic individuals tend to break down body mass into energy. They are easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry. Metabolic individuals tend to burn or use energy. They tend to be rosy-cheeked, easily irritated, focused, driven, and easily inflamed. Anabolic individuals tend to store energy as body mass. If they store too much energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion. Anabolic people tend to be stable and grounded.

I believe drinking 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar with water twice a day cured my stomach ulcer. It is alkalizing and reduces the burning sensation.

I wonder if I have misunderstood the symbols above. Pitta has a slash through it, which I understand means it is Pitta aggravating. Yet your notes say that vinegar increases the flow of bile, cleansing the liver, which has a cooling, Pitta pacifying effect on the blood. Thank you for any clarification.

please clarify, if ACV is cooling by detoxifying the liver (pitta pacifying), yet the symbol says it's pitta aggravating..

Vinegar can aggravate inflammation and irritate the digestive tract. It is very stimulating. But it cools the blood. So the answer is that it increases pitta in the GI, and descreases Pitta in the blood!
Apple cider is an old folk remedy for menopausal hot flashes. I have known women who have felt a positive reduction in night time hot flashes and sweats in less then a week after taking apple cider daily. How would apple cider create this result? It purifies the blood and perhaps for some women it is the sluggish toxic/ama build up that is a contributing factor in their night sweat hot flashes. Also I am confused about apple ciders acidity. I have read that although apple cider is acidic it has alkalizing effect on the body. Kindly advise. This website is rich is information and its dedication to heath is exemplary. Thank you. Since apple cider is sour in taste, it generally stimulates secretions in the body and therefore should not be drying.

Generally apple cider vinegar is not considered to exacerbate bone loss, but it is best to check with your doctor about using it.

Thank you for the great article. I notice the serving size for ACV is 1/4 teaspoon. Some recommend 15 ml (1 Table Spoon) on a glass of water 30 minutes before a meal to help with digestion.Could you please write/talk more about this? Maybe something about what type of foods might digest better with ACV aswell?

I am Pitta Kapha person and apple cider vinegar is doing wonders for me. Drinking a 300ml warm water with 2tsp of apple cider vinegar first thing in the morning. Have the habit to not eat until lunch which helped me see the curative effects over few weeks this spring, giving me an easier, lighter calming feeling and a clear mind. Thank you for everything you are doing on this site. Greatly appreciated! Cheers!
